Baptism (Christening)

Baptism marks the start of someone’s Christian life, and membership of the church. As such it is serious but wonderful moment. But is only the start so the service (whether for children or adults) will express a commitment to continue growing in the Faith, in the company of the rest of the church.

Adults are baptised after a period of preparation. This would usually be in the form of the Alpha Course. Adults would also be confirmed; the bishop would pray for each person and welcome them into the wider fellowship of the church.

St Mary’s welcomes children for baptism. They will live in the parish or have a strong pastoral connection with St Mary’s (e.g. they or their parents are regular worshippers). Most families opt for a service at 11.00 – they are generally offered every other month on the fourth Sunday.  There is more flexibility about dates if a family would prefer a 9.30 Sunday service. A member of the ministry team  will meet with the parents to prepare the family for the service.

If you would like to talk to someone about having your child baptised, or being baptised yourself please contact the Parish office.
